Thursday afternoon

Dear Alex,

I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.

See you there.

In Queensland, children from year 1 to year 3 learn a simple sloped print called the Queensland Beginners Alphabet, and in year 4 they move on to QCursive. Edu QLD Beginner is the first of those, turned into a font.

Each Australian state, with a few sharing, has its own mandated model, and anyone teaching children aged 4 to 9 is bound to it. Tina and Corey Anderson designed 5 Foundation Fonts for Australian Schools to cover them, with weights, widths and optical sizes tuned for the classroom, and Google for Education Australia partnered with Google Fonts to put them into Docs, Sheets and Slides, where Chromebook schools already do their work.

The Regular imitates the thickness of a pencil line, so children see letters that look like the ones they are making. 4 weights go up to Bold. Workspace gets a standard version; the full OpenType build, with the transitional joining alternates of Queensland Beginners Cursive, sits on the project’s GitHub.

126 characters, plain Latin with common math symbols. Print it big for small readers.
