Mango sticky rice for 2
Itim is what Thai people call an ice pop, and the font has that summery, unbuttoned mood. Its strokes copy a marker with a rounded tip, the Thai letters are looped and the Latin is a semi-serif, both written loosely enough to pass for handwriting.
Looped Thai has a trap in it, though. Handwriting faces simplify details, and once the details go, pairs like บ and ป or ข and ช can drift toward each other. Cadson Demak, the Thai foundry that led the project, had to keep those pairs apart while still keeping the casual hand, and they did it carefully. Suppakit Chalermlarp is credited as designer, and Pablo Impallari did the early OpenType work that lets the font imitate handwriting; the Latin carries his 2014 copyright.
Cadson Demak started in 2002 as Thailand’s first communication design firm to make type and became a foundry in 2008.
Itim has swashes and discretionary ligatures, with fractions and sub and superscripts, and the Latin side covers Vietnamese as well. A picture book or a school worksheet is where it was meant to go, and where we would put it.
