Type an underscore in Playwrite IT Trad Guides and you get no letter, only the ruled lines, exactly as wide as a word space. That is the trick that makes it useful: a teacher can build a practice sheet with a model word at the start of the row and empty guidelines after it, for the child to fill in.
The guides run behind every other character as well, marking the baseline, the x-height, and the tops of ascenders and bottoms of descenders, so a child can see how tall each part of a letter should be. Underneath is Playwrite IT Trad, TypeTogether’s font of the upright cursive most widely taught in Italian schools. That style dates from the early to mid 20th century, and Francesco Ascoli, a handwriting expert, says it went into the national guidelines in 1945.
Italy has a special place in the story, since handwriting in the Latin script goes back to models from the Italian Renaissance. Early in the 21st century, though, educators grew worried about the quality of children’s handwriting there, and new approaches followed, among them the Scrittura Corsiva modern cursive project.
