The handwriting Slovak children learn today was approved in 1932, by the government of what was then Czechoslovakia. It is called Zjednodušená psací latinka, Simplified Latin script, and the 2020 Framework Curriculum still gives a sample of joined cursive based on it and asks pupils to follow its letter shapes and its slant.
Oddly, nobody had made an official digital version. The ministry has shared the model with private publishers since 1993, and each publisher drew its own copy for its textbooks. Until 2020, schools only got state money for textbooks bought from state-verified publishers; that rule has since gone.
Playwrite SK is TypeTogether’s take on the model, drawn by Veronika Burian and José Scaglione. It is a slanted, fully joined cursive written at a slow pace, with medium to short ascenders and descenders. The extenders loop but never knot, the 1 exception being a German-style t. Several lowercase letters begin with a curved entry stroke, and the z is a plain italic form with no descender.
The capitals stay cursive and mostly plain, apart from 2 oddities: an unusually built Q and an S with a vertical spine.
