Thursday afternoon
Dear Alex,
I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.
See you there.

The a in Playpen Sans will not look the same twice in a row. TypeTogether drew 7 versions of each character and built a shuffler into the font that picks among them as you type, so no shape repeats close to itself and a line reads as if somebody wrote it. Most casual fonts run out of alternates long before that, or swap them in clumsily.
The team behind it spent more than 2 years researching how primary schools teach handwriting, work published as Primarium, and the credits are long: Laura Meseguer, Veronika Burian, José Scaglione, Kostas Bartsokas, Vera Evstafieva, Tom Grace and Yorlmar Campos. They made it for people who are not designers.
Greek and Cyrillic are written as if by the same hand as the Latin. Coverage runs to more than 700 Latin-script languages, 619 of them from Sub-Saharan Africa, plus 54 that use Cyrillic, and sister fonts carry the idea into Arabic, Devanagari, Hebrew and Thai.
Details to look for: a double-story a, i, l and y with either straight or curved endings, optional shapes for f, G, I and M. There are 26 emoji as well, a pencil and a dinosaur and a unicorn among them, drawn to match the weights.
8 weights, Thin to ExtraBold. A comic or a classroom worksheet is where it belongs.
