Which hand should a Dutch child learn? Most classrooms still teach verbonden schrift, a slanted, continuous cursive with loops, but more and more teachers pick blokschrift instead, plain unjoined print letters, and a few mix the 2 in whatever order suits the class. The lessons usually start in Groep 3, once children have the motor skills from the years before.

Playwrite NL follows the Dutch model, and this Guides cut adds the writing lines to every letter: baseline, x-height, ascender line and descender line, so a child copying a word can see how high each stroke goes. An underscore prints the lines with nothing on them, at the width of a word space, for empty rows on a worksheet.

TypeTogether’s Veronika Burian and José Scaglione drew it for the Playwrite school fonts, which rest on Primarium’s research into how handwriting is taught around the world. It came to Google Fonts in November 2024, 1 Regular weight. Do not press B or I in a word processor with it; there is no bold or italic, and the faked versions look poor.
