Episode 12 drops tonight

This font started as the house type of a comedy company. All India Bakchod began in Mumbai in 2012 as a podcast by Tanmay Bhat and Gursimran Khamba and grew into a sketch channel on YouTube and a production house, and Saumya Kishore and Sanchit Sawaria drew Bakbak for its video titles and posters. Heavy, then, by necessity: a thumbnail has to shout.

The arches borrow from Johnston, Edward Johnston’s humanist sans of 1913 for the London Underground, which to us gives the Latin a friendlier curve than you expect from a face this fat, and the Devanagari is built to the same loud weight. The designers wanted it neutral enough to carry anything from a warning to a mockery, and in our view it manages that, with no jokes built into the letters themselves.

AIB stopped operating in 2018 and was dissolved the next year. The font outlived it, released openly in September 2021 with Marc Foley of Google Fonts as a contributor. 1 weight, Devanagari and Latin.
