Chicago house parties and the city’s LGBTQ dance nights, going back to the early 1980s, are where the inline in this face comes from. Big Shoulders, Patric King’s condensed American Gothic superfamily, was made for the Chicago Design System, and the inline cuts bring that party lettering into it.

Why Text, for an inline? Big Shoulders splits its styles by size. The Text cuts are tuned for settings up to 72 pt, and Display versions take over above that, so this is the one for a poster’s smaller lines and subheads.

It is very condensed, with a tall lowercase. 9 weights here, Thin to Black, and Google added the variable version in October 2020.

We would still not go below about 24 px. The line inside each stroke needs room before it shows, and the heavier weights keep it visible longer than Thin does.
