Jonny Pinhorn named this font after shrikhand, a sweet, creamy Gujarati dessert he happens to love, and the letters have some of the same richness: fat, round, and in no hurry to look serious.
The Gujarati came first in spirit. For 3 or 4 years before he started drawing it in June 2015, Pinhorn lived in Ahmedabad and worked for Indian Type Foundry, and he spent that time soaking up the hand painted lettering on the streets of Gujarat. The font grew out of conversations with colleagues about how good the Gujarati script looks when it is allowed to curve and swell as much as it likes. A Latin alphabet was drawn to keep it company, heavy in the same way, and Google added the pair in June 2016.
Small things show that it was made for real Gujarati work. The digits ૦ to ૯ are there, so are the Gujarati rupee sign ૱ and the Indian ₹, and localized forms sit in the OpenType tables with kerning, ordinals and superscripts. A sweet shop price board could be set entirely in it.
There is 1 weight and it is wide. Keep it to a headline or a poster line, in either script or both, and hand the paragraphs to a quieter face.
