A night in old Cairo
Blackletter and Kufic do not usually share a page. Mohamed Gaber put them in the same font, and the bridge between them is the reed pen: both scripts were drawn as if written with 1, so the sharp, broken edges of a Gothic Latin find a match in Arabic letters that are equally angular.
The Latin keeps its blackletter edges and leans toward geometry. The Arabic goes further. Its thick strokes overlap one another and those overlaps stand in for the baseline that most Arabic letters would normally sit on, which gives the old Kufic idea a modern look.
There are relatives. Blaka Hollow is an outlined version, and Blaka Ink is a color font, with the colors built into the font, though only a few applications such as Chrome from version 98 can show them. This page has the plain Blaka.
Kief Type Foundry published it, and Google added it in April 2022. A book cover or a bilingual festival poster, set large, with the 2 scripts sized by eye until they balance.
