The rowdy of Indian action films is usually a man from a poor or unknown background, and his toughness is less about him than about the audience’s fantasy of being strong and fearless. Jaikishan Patel built a typeface on that figure. Each letter is a little rough and a little odd on its own; together they swagger.
Patel is an Indian communication designer who studied visual communication at the IDC School of Design, IIT Bombay, and has done film publicity work, including for Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Go Goa Gone. He tends to design typefaces around particular genres, and this one is aimed at action, drama, adventure, thrillers, noir and crime. It comes from his label MagicType, which sells the full family as Rowdy Pro.
The 3 weights have separate jobs:
- Light is semi-condensed, for supporting text under a title
- Regular is for big headers
- Bold is for the heaviest title work
It reads best large. A slashed zero is in the set, oddly practical for a face this theatrical, and the Latin covers Vietnamese.
