Underneath the scribble is a serious sans. Cabin, Pablo Impallari’s humanist family, draws on the typefaces of Edward Johnston and Eric Gill and adds modern proportions, optical corrections and a few geometric touches. Cabin Sketch takes those letters and fills them with hatching, the texture of a teenage doodle in Impallari’s words.
The structure is still sound under the hatching, so it reads fine at headline size. It came out in Regular and Bold and was 1 of the earliest families on Google Fonts, added in March 2011. The spacing and kerning were done with Igino Marini’s iKern system.
Use it for a summer camp poster or a cereal box. Below 24 px the hatching turns to gray fuzz.
