A handmade sign outside the house of Squad Co. 18, the New York firefighters in the West Village, is where Pompiere began. Karolina Lach turned it into a condensed, low-contrast sans with very tall ascenders over a very small x-height, playful and a little sweet.

The small x-height and the modest weight point to medium and large sizes. At 12 px it gets lost. 1 Regular, basic Latin. A bakery window or a children’s book title would suit it.
