Grand opening on Friday night
Kourosh Beigpour took his starting point from Shablon, a stencil made in Iran about 30 years before this font. Shablon only did Persian, and only the bare letters at that: no vowel marks, no other diacritics, no Latin. Jomhuria, whose name means “republic”, keeps the spirit of that stencil and builds a full Persian and Arabic display face on it, dark and heavy, with Beigpour’s own taste and present-day methods worked in.
The dots got particular care. They stay where calligraphy puts them, since in this script the dot positions carry much of the beauty and a lot of the readability, and a face meant for big sizes shows every misplaced dot.
Eben Sorkin drew the Latin. It was scaled to suit the Arabic, so the Latin letters come out small for their point size, and you will want to set an English line noticeably larger than you would expect if it stands alone. Lasse Fister did the engineering, on top of the technical groundwork Khaled Hosny laid for his Amiri. KB Studio, based in Los Angeles, led the project.
