Loading every icon in Material Symbols Sharp costs about 295 KB on a web page. Ask Google’s font service for only the handful you use, through its icon_names parameter, and the file drops to something like 1.7 KB, so subset before you ship, nobody needs 3,800 icons to draw a toolbar.
Sharp is the corner-cut sibling of Outlined and Rounded in Material Symbols, the set Google introduced in April 2022 to take over from the classic Material Icons. It was designed variable-first, starting from the 24 px drawings of the older icons, and in its variable form it has 4 axes: optical size from 20 to 48, weight from 100 to 700, grade from -50 to 200, and fill. Optical size thickens or thins the strokes as an icon scales so it looks consistent, and the filled version of an icon is a position on the fill axis, so fill can be animated to show that a button has been switched on.
The download here gives you 7 static weights from Thin to Bold.
2 limits to keep in mind. Pixel-perfect alignment to the grid is promised only at 20 and 24 px, and there are no 2-tone icons anywhere in Symbols. For a new interface we’d still start here, with the subset set up from the first build.
