Caslon’s Ionic came out in 1844, and Clarendon from the Fann Street Foundry followed in 1845. Between them they started the fat grotesque slab serif, the clarendon, and Kostas Bartsokas took that style, twisted it and blew it up as far as it would go. Oi is about as fat as a typeface gets.
The name is an interjection used in several languages. Said lightly it can be a friendly hi, and said abruptly enough it is a challenge to a fight, and the letters behave like the second version.
Width is the other surprise. Set a sentence in Oi and in Arial and Oi needs around 81% more room, so a headline that sits on 1 line in an ordinary face will break onto 2 here. Count your words before you choose it.
For a single style the file goes deep. There are 1,509 characters covering Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Tamil and Vietnamese, with 7 stylistic sets, discretionary ligatures and a slashed zero sitting in the OpenType features where most people will never find them. We would keep it to 3 or 4 words, very large, on a poster or a record sleeve, and let it shout as much as it likes.
