Grand Theater, Opening Night
This is the incised member of the Jacques Francois pair, drawn so each letter looks cut into the surface. Underneath is a design of about 1760 by Jacques François Rosart, who lived from 1714 to 1774, shown by the Enschedé printing house as no. 811 and revived by Cyreal in 2011.
Alexei Vanyashin and Nikita Kanarev let the revival drift from the specimen where screens asked for it, with a bigger x-height and less contrast for an even color, and kept the historic quirks that made the old type worth reviving.
Size is the rule here. The Shadow was hinted by hand for screens starting at 24 pixels per em. On Windows that means 18 pt at 96 ppi, or 15 pt at 120 ppi; on a Mac at 72 ppi, 24 pt. Below those sizes the carved detail has too few pixels to work with.
There is 1 Regular style with basic Latin. A theater bill or the title of a menu, set large, and the plain Jacques Francois for anything under it.
