Every hatch stroke in Rubik Marker Hatch was placed by a program. It is one of the Rubik Filtered fonts that NaN and Luke Prowse generated by running Rubik’s outlines through a script (the Glyph-Filters code, public on GitHub) and letting it fill each letter with marker strokes. Under the pattern sits the Rubik that Hubert and Fischer, Meir Sadan and Cyreal made, and that is why a novelty face like this one covers Hebrew and Cyrillic next to Latin, 689 characters in all.
The inheritance turns up in odd corners. Tabular figures, a slashed zero, case sensitive forms: a filter font has little use for them, but they came along with the source outlines.
It went onto Google Fonts in June 2022, as 1 Regular style.
Size decides everything with this one. Hatched interiors need pixels before they resolve, so we would not set it under about 48 px, and on a poster or an album sleeve it can go far bigger. Any smaller and the strokes clot into a gray block.
