Nothing hangs over a word in Baloo Bhai 2. Gujarati letters carry no headline, so each round form stands on its own and a word reads as a string of separate soft shapes, open at the top, where the Devanagari in Baloo 2 is held together by its bar.

Supriya Tembe and Noopur Datye drew the Gujarati. The script sits so close to Devanagari that it shares its punctuation: the danda । and double danda ॥ in this font are the Devanagari characters.

Most of the work is out of sight. Behind the alphabet sit over 400 extra glyphs, half forms for conjuncts and the combinations with ra, and several of the half forms come in 2 or 3 versions.

The Gujarati rupee sign ૱ is included, and the om ૐ.

Which weight, then? For a Navratri flyer we would take Bold or Extra Bold and set it big, since the open tops make Gujarati look lighter on the page than Devanagari of the same weight. The Regular can handle the 2 lines of copy underneath. Fractions and tabular figures are there for a farsan shop’s price board, and Latin Extended and Vietnamese ride along with the Latin.
