Tamil has its own old signs for day and month, ௳ and ௴, part of a small set used in accounts and dates, and Baloo Thambi 2 includes the whole set, the Tamil rupee sign ௹ among them. Few people will type them. It is still good to find them drawn in the same rounded hand when they do.

Aadarsh Rajan drew the Tamil.

Tamil needs fewer conjuncts than the other Indian scripts in the family, so the extra glyphs go elsewhere:

  1. every consonant with the pulli, the dot that cancels its vowel, as a ready-made shape
  2. every consonant with the vowel signs i and ii already joined on
  3. the ligature ஸ்ரீ, the shri
  4. க்ஷ, the ksha

The letters themselves are broad, with deep bowls and big loops, and Tamil words tend to run long. That makes Extra Bold a face for 1 or 2 words on a shop sign, at a size where the loops stay open. For a flyer or a children’s book we would set Regular with the line spacing opened a little wider than usual.
