Merry and warm, from Gran
Heinrich Kuehn drew a needlepoint alphabet in Berlin around 1880, and Jacquard is Sarah Cadigan-Fried’s expanded revival of it, made for her Soft Type Collection for knitters. The capitals are 12 pixels tall, hence the number.
In her words, type for knitting is pixel type, except that the yarn sets the size of each pixel, and the scale depends on its weight and on how many pixels make up a letter’s height. This Charted version lays the letters out as a chart to work from. The plain Jacquard 12 is the one for setting text.
She had machine knitting in mind, though hand knitting, needlework and bedazzling all work too. 1 tip from her that any Fair Isle knitter will nod at: plan for the floats.
