John Vargas Beltrán looked at the record sleeves of the 1970s for Salsa, and named it after the main musical genre of Latin America. He wanted that feeling with no grunge, no vernacular kitsch and no added decoration, so he built the letters from the vertical structure of an italic and the way a flat round brush moves on paper.
It was his final project for the postgraduate program in typography at the University of Buenos Aires. 1 style, with swash capitals for the first letter of a title. Keep it to titles and short lines, a flyer or a playlist cover.
