Petr van Blokland settled Bitcount’s x-height at 5 pixels, the fewest that still give a readable a and e. With a row added on top for ascenders and another underneath for descenders, every letter fits a 5 by 7 field. Single in the name means stems 1 pixel thick; the Double styles use 2.
Weight in Bitcount comes from the size of each pixel more than from extra pixels, and the 9 weights here run from Thin to Black. The arithmetic is friendly too. Each pixel measures 1/10 of the font size, so adding 1 pixel of space between letters takes a tracking value of 10 in InDesign.
Van Blokland’s own list of uses runs wide:
- stacked layers in different colors and pixel shapes, offset a little for shadows and 3D highlights
- scrolling LED signs, where the hardware fixes the grid
- bitmap type for low resolution screens and printers
- physical letters, built from LEGO bricks, flowerpots or the lights of an office block
We would most like to see the lit windows. 7 stylistic sets, small caps and a slashed zero are in the feature list as well, and Google Fonts added the family in January 2025.
