Blackletter in a Thin weight is a strange and rather lovely thing, and Grenze Gotisch has one, at 100, with 8 more steps up to Black at 900.
Renata Polastri made it at Omnibus-Type in 2020 as an offshoot of Grenze. The capitals were swapped for blackletter forms and certain lowercase letters picked up small dramatic details, while the rest of the lowercase stayed close to the parent. To our eye that keeps a whole sentence readable, which a full gothic alphabet rarely manages.
Who needs old style figures and a slashed zero in a gothic face? Omnibus-Type evidently thought somebody would. Discretionary ligatures and stylistic alternates sit next to a complete figure kit, tabular and proportional, old style and lining, with fractions and that zero. There are 643 characters per style, and Vietnamese is covered.
Our pick would be the Light or the Regular for a fantasy novel cover and the Black for a beer label that wants to shout.
