Joan Trochut Blanchart was a Catalan designer, born in Caldes de Montbui in 1920, who died in Barcelona in 1980. His best known work is SuperTipo Veloz, a modular Art Deco system from 1942 built from interchangeable parts, which Andreu Balius had already digitized with Trochut’s grandson, the designer Alex Trochut. This font goes back to a different specimen. Bisonte, released in 1950 by the Fonderie Typographique Française, is the source, and Balius made Trochut as an homage.
The result is a geometric display face with a sense of humor. It sets narrow, so a long headline fits, and the Italic takes up exactly as much room as the Regular, which makes it easy to swap one for the other in a layout without anything reflowing.
Regular, Italic and Bold, basic Latin. Balius pitched it for magazines, posters and book jackets, and we wouldn’t push it further than that.
