The Mai-Kai opened in December 1956 in Oakland Park, near Fort Lauderdale in Florida, a Polynesian restaurant run by the brothers Bob and Jack Thornton, and in 2014 it went onto the US National Register of Historic Places. Its logo is lettered in bamboo. Brian J. Bonislawsky of Astigmatic took that lettering as the model for Hanalei, and this is the filled version, the solid companion to the outline Hanalei.
He released it as version 1.000 in November 2012. The character set goes past Western European into Latin-2, Turkish and the Windows Baltic set.
The lowercase is nearly as tall as the capitals, so words come out as blocks of bamboo. That is fine for a tiki menu or a luau flyer and tiring after a sentence or 2. Titles only, set large.
