Small capitals stand in for the lowercase in this version, and every letter is enormously wide. Set a word in Diplomata SC next to Arial and it takes up more than twice the space.
The source was an old metal face that a printer Eduardo Tunni knew wanted on offset presses. His printed sample held capitals and figures and little else, so Tunni had to reinterpret what existed and draw the letters that never had. It came out Bodoni in spirit. The weight sits in the vertical strokes and a soft curve joins each serif to its stem. Through the main stroke of each letter runs a thin line of light.
To make the design usable beyond titles Tunni added small caps and a lowercase, and the family now has 2 members, Diplomata and this small caps version. The 2023 update enlarged the character set and added fractions.
Use it for a diploma or a name on a letterhead, where a few words get all the width they want.
