The line cut down the middle of every stroke comes from the dance floor. Patric King took the inline from the House parties of Black Chicagoans and from local LGBTQ dance events, a scene that goes back to the early 1980s, and turned it into a formal cut of the typeface the city itself uses.

That typeface is Big Shoulders, a superfamily of condensed American Gothic letters King drew at XO Type Co. for the Chicago Design System, so that the city and its residents could speak in 1 consistent typographic voice. Its tall forms draw on the city’s railway past and its long record of public political action, with dance as a further thread. The Stencil branch deals with work and protest. Inline is the one for celebration.

You get 9 weights from Thin to Black. The letters are narrow to begin with, and we would reach for the heavier end on a poster, where each stroke is thick enough for the inline to have room. Small caps are in there too, with a caps-to-small-caps switch, plus a stylistic set and alternates.

Would it carry body text? No, and it does not try to. It went onto Google Fonts in February 2025, and it belongs on a flyer or a festival banner.
