Which shape a kanji takes depends, in Fusion Pixel, on which file you load. In the JP build the answer comes from Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs, its Jōyō Kanji table and the companion table for characters outside it, while the SC, TC and KR builds follow Chinese and Korean standards for the same code points. For a Japanese game that is the reason to pick this file over its siblings.
TakWolf has published sample projects for Godot and for Unity that show the font being swapped per language during localization, which tells you fairly well who the audience is. Ark Pixel Font, the designer’s main project, supplies the 12px base, and Cubic 11 and Galmuri patch the gaps in traditional Chinese and Korean.
What sits in this one file:
- Latin, Greek and Cyrillic.
- Hiragana, katakana and kanji.
- Hangul and Bopomofo from the shared CJK set.
- 1 Regular style, 36,980 characters.
The monospaced grid keeps a text box tidy, though the project itself suggests the proportional version for running text, where spacing and line height come out more natural.
