Munich beer hall, est. 1912
Ludwig Hohlwein, the German poster artist, trained as an architect in Munich before he turned to posters and became a pioneer of the Sachplakat, the object poster. The letters he painted by hand on those sheets are where Eben Sorkin started with Autour One.
Sorkin changed and adapted the shapes in a number of ways so they would also work in paragraphs and on the web, at a wide range of sizes. Autour is French for round, and the letters are both round and very wide, with a big lowercase.
It came from Sorkin Type, the foundry he set up in 2011, which also made Merriweather and Fjalla One. The first full version was finished in April 2012, and by September he had reworked the spacing and scale to take advantage of improvements in the ttfautohint hinting tool. The character set takes in Eastern European Latin, Turkish and the dotted consonants Ḃ, Ḋ, Ḟ, Ṁ, Ṗ, Ṡ and Ṫ.
We would use it for a heading of 3 or 4 words, or a short intro paragraph at a generous size.
