Where 2 consonants meet without a vowel, Jaini Purva stacks them one above the other, the way the scribe of a Jain Kalpasutra manuscript from 1503 CE wrote them. Its twin, Jaini, lays the same conjuncts out side by side as modern Devanagari readers expect. Everything else is shared, so the choice between the 2 fonts comes down to that one point: the old vertical stacking or the current horizontal habit.
The manuscript hand is far from Balbodh, the Devanagari most people read every day. The headline over the letters breaks into pieces with triangular wedges, the upper matras are short, the letters are squarish and big, heavy knots sit in the strokes, and the lower matras tuck up inside the letter. Girish Dalvi and Maithili Shingre drew the Devanagari at Ek Type, the Mumbai collective, in 2016 and set those features on letter structures a reader today would know.
Taresh Vohra added the Latin in 2023, taken from the hand-lettering on Indian streets, where Latin gets drawn with a Devanagari pen angle and a faint headline. It is a condensed, wavy-stemmed thing and fits a lot into a short line.
For a manuscript look in a title or a book cover, Purva. For a longer Hindi headline that strangers have to read quickly, we would pick Jaini.
