The mean of 725 alphabets
What would you get if you averaged every font you own? Dan Sayers, who says plainly that he is not a type designer, wanted to know, and Averia is the answer.
His first try was crude: he stacked every letter of every font at low opacity with ImageMagick and PHP. That gave a blurry average with, oddly, a sharp baseline. The method he kept was more careful. Each letter outline was split into about 500 evenly spaced points, and the matching points were averaged across the whole set, so the outlines and the spacing both came out of the arithmetic. It took around a month of part-time work, with advice from his brother Nick Sayers, Lloyd Thomas, Tom Muller and Chris McGrail.
The Regular, Light and Bold of the other Averia families were averaged weight by weight, Light from the light fonts, Bold from the bold. Gruesa is different: it is the average of all 725 fonts at once, regardless of weight. Avería itself means breakdown or mechanical damage in Spanish, and it shares a root with the English word average.
There is 1 style and no OpenType features. Use it big, where people can see the strangeness.
