Spice market, open late
Egyptian film posters of the 1950s and 1960s were lettered in Ruq’ah, and that is where Zeynep Akay, a type designer in London, went for the Arabic of Rakkas. The font leans hard on contextual alternates to imitate calligraphy, offering different forms for many letter positions, and words can cascade downward the way a painted title would.
The Latin is the surprise. Akay gave it blackletter bones and then loosened them, so the 2 scripts share 1 style and neither one dresses up as the other.
1 weight, with plenty to play with: 9 stylistic sets, discretionary ligatures, old style and lining figures for the Latin, and Arabic-Indic digits next to the Western ones. We would put it on a bilingual film festival poster before anything else.
