Bierstube am Marktplatz
Fraktur and the Bauhaus rarely sit at the same table. One is the broken blackletter of old German print, the other the stripped geometric sans of the Bauhaus school, and John Vargas Beltrán wanted a font that was both at once, old and modern in the same letter. Germania One keeps the angular breaks of fraktur and rebuilds them out of simple geometric parts.
Type historian Luc Devroye compared the result to the lettering on German pub signs, and that is where we would put it too, along with beer labels.
Vargas Beltrán, born in Bogotá in 1974, graduated from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in 1997, helped found the Colombian designers’ association ADG Colombia, and later studied type design at the University of Buenos Aires. He drew Germania One in FontLab and finished version 1.0 in December 2011. 1 Regular style, Latin with a scattering of extended accents and the old long s.
