Rubik Vinyl came out of code. NaN, an exploratory type practice in Berlin co-founded by Luke Prowse, wrote a set of Python scripts called Glyph Filters that run inside the Glyphs font editor, many of them built on Simplex noise, and fed the existing Rubik family through them. Each filter turns out a different finished font; this one is Vinyl. Simon Cozens reviewed the code.
Because the starting point is Rubik, by Hubert & Fischer with Meir Sadan and Cyreal, the result keeps Rubik’s character set, Hebrew and Cyrillic included, and the full spread of figures and fractions.
Rubik Vinyl came out in November 2022 in a batch with Rubik Gemstones, Spray Paint, 80s Fade and Storm, part of a series of Rubik Filtered fonts that began with Rubik Beastly in 2021. 1 style. We would treat it as artwork: a record sleeve, a poster title, a few big words.
