Zum goldenen Hirsch
Carl Albert Fahrenwaldt drew the type behind UnifrakturMaguntia in 1901. Peter Wiegel’s Berthold Mainzer Fraktur followed it, and j. ‘mach’ wust took Wiegel’s font as his base and left its glyph design almost untouched.
His own work is underneath the letters, in the smart font layer, with ligature code written 3 times over for OpenType, AAT and Graphite, using FontForge, Apple’s ftxenhancer and the Graphite compiler. The experimental part is spacing. Spread a word out and the obligatory blackletter ligatures, ch, ck, ſt and tz, stay joined, while fi and fl come apart, as a careful Fraktur compositor would have done it.
It first appeared in 2010, aimed at @font-face use on the web. 1 Regular style. Long passages of Fraktur are heavy going, so we would keep it to a masthead or the name over a shop door.
