In the Arabic of Blaka, thick strokes overlap one another, and that overlap stands in for the baseline most letters would sit on. Mohamed Gaber made the family as an experiment, putting the gothic weight of blackletter beside Kufic, and he matched the 2 scripts through the reed pen: both look as if one had drawn them. The Latin keeps its sharp corners. The Arabic has the corners and the mass as well.
Blaka Hollow is the outlined member, the same letters with only their contours drawn, so the inside takes on whatever sits behind it. A solid Blaka exists too, and a color version called Blaka Ink.
What would we do with Hollow? Set it large over a photograph or a strong colored panel, Arabic and Latin together, for a festival title or a book jacket. At small sizes the outlines crowd each other and the letters are lost.
It comes as a single Regular with 569 characters.
