Cascadia began in Microsoft’s Windows Terminal project as the replacement for Consolas. Cascadia Mono is that design with the programming ligatures turned off, for people who want 1 glyph in each square and no symbols merging into each other. Same letters, same spacing, fewer surprises when you read someone else’s diff.
Aaron Bell drew it, and the Google Fonts credit adds Mohamad Dakak, Viktoriya Grabowska and Liron Lavi Turkenich, who between them took the coverage far past Latin. Greek, Cyrillic, Hebrew and Arabic are all in there, with Vietnamese and the Braille patterns, 2,426 characters in the Regular.
The italic is where the project went looking for personality, and it keeps the exact character width of the upright, as a monospace has to. 6 weights, Extra Light at 200 to Bold at 700, each with its italic. Slashed zero and 2 stylistic sets are available too.
The goal was legibility on lower resolution screens at small sizes. We would run the Regular or Medium in an editor all day and save the Extra Light for slides, where the code sits large.
