Type -----> in Lilex and you get 1 long arrow. Type ------------> and you get a longer one. The arrow ligatures are generated, so they stretch to whatever length you draw them, and that small trick says a lot about who the font is for.
Lilex is IBM Plex Mono taken further for programmers. Mikhael Khrustik built it on top of Plex, which is why the credit also carries Mike Abbink, Paul van der Laan and Pieter van Rosmalen, and added what Plex Mono lacks for a code editor: ligatures, PowerLine symbols for terminal prompts, Greek, and a full set of single-character arrows.
The ligatures only change what you see. Underneath, the file stays plain ASCII, so == still compiles as 2 equals signs whether or not they are drawn joined. Some ligatures pull related characters together, like == and ---, while others only nudge glyphs into optical alignment, like .. and ??. A few arrows are switched off by default because they could be mistaken for logical operators; you can switch them on if your language has no such clash.
Every weight from Thin to Bold has an italic, and the italics carry the same ligatures and symbols as the uprights. The character set reaches Cyrillic and Vietnamese as well. Google Fonts added the family in November 2025.
We’d run the Regular at 14 px with the Light italic for comments, though that is taste.
