Type /// in Neon and the 3 slashes get their spacing adjusted. Type //// and nothing happens. That is the liga feature at work, and its restraint is typical of the family: the bigger coding ligatures, arrows and comparison operators and markup tags, are parked in 10 stylistic sets from ss01 to ss10, off until you ask for them 1 group at a time.
Neon is the neo-grotesque of Monaspace, the 5 families GitHub Next began with the foundry Lettermatic in 2022, and the plainest of them to our eye. Its siblings are a humanist sans, a slab serif, a handwriting face and a mechanical sans, and all 5 share metrics, so a comment set in 1 of the others leaves every column of Neon code where it was.
The other trick is texture healing, done with the contextual alternates feature, calt. Monospaced type has always had cramped letters and loose ones side by side, an m squeezed into the same box as an i, and Monaspace hunts for those pairs and trades in alternates so the white space gets shared out more evenly. Each character still takes exactly 1 cell.
The 14 files go from ExtraLight 200 to ExtraBold 800, each with an italic. Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese are covered. For an editor at 13 or 14 px we would start with Regular and leave texture healing switched on; in a single word the change is small, over a whole file it is easy to see.
