What if a docstring looked authoritative, marked out from the code by its letterforms on top of its color? That is 1 of the ideas GitHub Next floats for Monaspace, and our guess for the job would be Xenon, the slab serif of the 5.
The trick behind the idea is shared metrics. All 5 Monaspace families sit on the same grid, so you can set comments in Xenon and code in Neon, the neo-grotesque, and the columns still line up. Argon is the humanist sans, Radon a handwriting face and Krypton a mechanical sans. Lettermatic drew them, with Riley Cran leading a team that included Danelle Cheney, Heather Cran, Jane Solomon and Lauren Dickens and with Ilya Ruderman consulting on the Cyrillic. GitHub Next started the project in 2022.
Xenon also carries the family’s texture healing, switched on through contextual alternates, and 10 stylistic sets of coding ligatures grouped by job: equality, arrows, markup tags, F# pipes, colons and more. Editors that cannot set OpenType features, Xcode and IntelliJ are the examples given, can use the “Frozen” builds, which have the sets turned on already.
14 styles here, Extra Light to Extra Bold with italics, normal width only. The slab serifs give a page of code more texture than the sans members do; we would try it for a full editor session before deciding, since some people find slabs restful on screen and others find them busy.

Names, values and punctuation share a fixed rhythm. Compare the zero with the capital O, and the number one with the lowercase l.
