The homepage for mononoki opens with a FizzBuzz loop. Multiples of 3 print mono, multiples of 5 print noki, and at 15 the name of the font falls out.
Matthias Tellen made it for programming and code review, as a passion project in his spare time. He had ordinary screens in mind, the laptops and office monitors where high resolution has not arrived, and wanted glyphs that survive being squashed into a grid of a few pixels but still hold enough detail for print and retina displays.
The other aim was telling look-alikes apart: 1, l and I, B and 8, C, D, O and 0 are each drawn to be unmistakable. This has a price, Tellen admits, a less even look and worse reading in long text, and he says he tried to keep the trade small.
A dotted zero waits in ss01 if you want one.
In all 4 styles Vietnamese, Greek and Cyrillic join the Latin, and the box drawing characters were built with Adobe’s box-drawing tool. In our view it suits a diff view better than a README.
