Back in the mid-1990s, Susan Lesch and David Lamkins made a free bitmap font for the Macintosh called Anonymous 9. They wanted a fixed-width face that read better than Monaco, the Mac’s own system monospace. Mark Simonson took that as the starting point for Anonymous Pro (his copyright on it runs from 2009 to 2010), an outline family of 4 styles, Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic, aimed at source code.

What a programmer gets from it is distinction between the usual suspects. O and 0, I and l and 1 all have separate shapes, so a variable name full of them can be read without guessing.

The odd and lovely detail: Regular and Bold carry embedded bitmaps for the smallest sizes, 10 to 13 pixels per em, which is the font’s way of going back to its bitmap roots. At those sizes the screen shows the stored pixel drawings and skips the scaled outline.

Greek and Cyrillic are in there as well. Next to newer coding fonts it looks a little old-fashioned, and we think that is part of its appeal for anyone who misses the look of a 90s terminal.

Letters, Figures & Code

Names, values and punctuation share a fixed rhythm. Compare the zero with the capital O, and the number one with the lowercase l.
