DeepMind asked Colophon Foundry for a monospace to sit beside DM Sans, with the DeepMind team giving creative direction, and DM Mono came out of that brief in 2020. It borrows from the sans loosely. Colophon reduced the contrast and made the proportions less geometric, which in a grid where every cell is the same width anyway was probably the sensible call.

There are 3 weights, Light, Regular and Medium, each with an italic, and no bold. That gap tells you what it is for: listings, terminal output, a column of numbers in a report, places where nobody needs to shout. If you want a heavy code heading you will have to borrow one from somewhere else.

Inside the files are 5 stylistic sets plus fractions, ordinals and superscripts, which is more than most monospaces of this size bother with. Would we write a long program in it? Probably not at Light. Medium on a dark editor background is where we would start.
