Windows Terminal needed a new face to replace Consolas, and Cascadia Code is what Microsoft got. The brief was to give a monospaced environment some personality without giving up legibility or performance, even on lower resolution screens and at small sizes. Most of that personality shows in the italic.

Programming ligatures are built in here, joining common symbol sequences into single shapes through contextual alternates. Not everyone wants that, and there is a twin, Cascadia Mono, with the ligatures switched off for those who prefer 1 glyph per cell.

Aaron Bell designed it at Saja Typeworks, and Google Fonts also credits Mohamad Dakak, Viktoriya Grabowska and Liron Lavi Turkenich. The language coverage goes a long way:

  • extended Latin with Vietnamese, Greek and Cyrillic
  • Arabic and Hebrew, plus braille and extra symbols

There are 6 weights from ExtraLight to Bold, each with its italic, 3 stylistic sets and a slashed zero. Would we change our editor for it? For a long session, yes, with the italic set aside for comments, where its livelier shapes make notes easy to tell from code at a glance.
