A handwriting face held to a monospaced grid sounds like a contradiction, and Radon is how GitHub Next and Lettermatic tried it. Each letter keeps the written feel and still occupies exactly the width of its counterpart in the other 4 Monaspace families.
That shared width is the whole reason for it. GitHub Next suggests giving tentative ideas a handwritten appearance, which in an editor means comments, TODOs and notes to self. Put the code in Neon or Argon and those notes in Radon, and not a character on the line shifts. Most monospaced fonts can not be mixed like that, since each has cells of its own width and the columns break.
On the GitHub Next side Cole Bemis, Amelia Wattenberger, Krzysztof Cieślak and Idan Gazit worked on the project with Lettermatic’s designers from 2022.
Radon gets the same machinery as the rest, texture healing and coding ligatures grouped in stylistic sets. Character variants cover the figures too, slashed and cut-out zeros among them, and Nerd Fonts builds have shipped alongside from version 1.2 on.
A whole file in Radon is more than we would want. In a comment block it reads like a note in the margin.
