Most italics lean 11 or 12 degrees. JetBrains Mono’s lean 9, and only 3 letters, a, y and f, take true cursive forms. Philipp Nurullin and Konstantin Bulenkov drew it at JetBrains for people who read code all day, and nearly every decision in it is about scanning text fast without misreading a character.
The lowercase is tall while the character width stays standard, and the round letters are pushed toward rectangles. Then there are the look-alikes:
- 1, l and I are each drawn to be told apart
- the zero has a dot inside and the O does not
- comma and period get shapes different enough to read at a glance
JetBrains has bundled it with its IDEs, IntelliJ IDEA among them, since version 2019.3, and it joined Google Fonts in November 2020. 8 weights from Thin to Extra Bold, each with an italic, 976 characters with Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese.
Code ligatures are built in and can be switched off. For editors without OpenType support there is a separate JetBrains Mono NL that has none.
Our setting for a long day: Regular at 13 or 14 px, or Medium if your screen renders thin.
