At text size Spline Sans Mono is a calm, plain monospaced grotesque that keeps out of the way. Blow it up and its little “thorn” traps come into view, details placed so they only open up at larger sizes. That split personality is the fun of it.
Spline, the team behind it, wanted a mono that could run a checkout page as well as a code editor. Eben Sorkin and Mirko Velimirović designed it, with Faride Mereb managing the project, Gonçalo Teixeira testing and giving design feedback, and the concept from Alejandro León. It arrived on Google Fonts in 2022.
Count the stylistic sets: 18. Add stylistic alternates, discretionary ligatures and a slashed zero, and there is a lot to adjust in a family whose letters all share 1 width. 5 weights from Light to Bold each have an italic, and those italics keep the same character width as the romans, as a mono must.
Language support is English and Western European, 411 characters per style. We would use it for prices and order summaries, where the digits line up by nature, and in a code editor at 14 px or so.
