Years ago Jens Kutílek drew pixel versions of the Commodore 64 and Amiga Workbench fonts. Workbench, with its sibling Sixtyfour, is the rework, and what set it off was Norbert Landsteiner’s essay Raster CRT Typography (According to DEC), on how type was rendered on raster CRT screens.

The full variable version has 2 custom axes. Scanlines sets the height of each pixel row and with it the dark gap between rows, and Bleed smears the pixels sideways the way phosphor lag did on an old monitor. The file on this page is the static Regular: monospaced, 217 characters, held to a small set on purpose because of where it comes from.

A game’s title screen or a fake terminal in a film prop, at large sizes, is where we’d put it.

Letters, Figures & Code

Names, values and punctuation share a fixed rhythm. Compare the zero with the capital O, and the number one with the lowercase l.
