The italics are the surprise. They are livelier than you would expect from a corporate typeface, and IBM’s own description admits they are unexpectedly expressive. Set a comment in italic in your editor and you will see what they meant.
Plex is the company typeface for IBM worldwide, developed by the IBM Brand & Experience team with Mike Abbink, and drawn with Paul van der Laan and Pieter van Rosmalen at Bold Monday. The theme the designers worked from is the relationship between people and machines, long a principal subject for IBM, and the result is a grotesque meant to stay out of the way without going cold, with engineered details that are supposed to look like IBM and nobody else.
The family has 4 branches:
- Sans
- Sans Condensed
- Serif
- Mono, this one, for code snippets and anything that needs fixed widths
The Mono comes in 14 styles, Thin at 100 to Bold at 700, each with an italic, and covers Latin and Cyrillic, with Vietnamese included. There are 5 stylistic sets and a slashed zero.
We’d pair it with Plex Sans for the prose around the code.

Letters, Figures & Code
Names, values and punctuation share a fixed rhythm. Compare the zero with the capital O, and the number one with the lowercase l.
